Wagner Speaks to Rotary Club of York

3/30/16 - Rotary Club of York Meeting

On Wednesday, I was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of York’s weekly meeting held at the Yorktowne Hotel.  I took this opportunity to share with members my business background and joked that I have been in the waste business since I was a kid when I worked on my family farm shoveling manure.

The work ethic I developed at a young age has served me well over the years, allowing me to start my first company when I was 20 years old.  And I have been able to utilize my business experience and knowledge in my work in Harrisburg to identify problems and find solutions.  During my speech I shed light on some of the major problems that I am focused on as we move forward.

Op-Ed Highlights Five Priorities to Address

This week I wrote an opinion piece for the York Daily Record, in which I reflect back on my first two years in office – as I say in the Op-Ed, it is hard to believe that April 2nd marks two years since being sworn in.  Similar to my speech given at Rotary, the article highlights five areas within our state government that need to be addressed in order to bring stability to Pennsylvania’s finances.

The five areas I have identified are: pensions, lack of accountability in state agencies, exploding benefit costs, payouts for unused leave, and school employee contracts.

Please take a moment to read the full article.  It is available online at The York Daily Record or on my website.

York E-Recycling Program Begins April 5th
Legislative Committee Conducts E-Waste Hearing

As many of you probably know, the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) halted their e-recycling program several months ago.  However, they have been able to contract with a new vendor, and they will be launching the new program on April 5th.  Be sure to visit their website for further details.

Because of problems like those experienced by YCSWA, the Joint Legislative Air and Water Pollution Control and Conservation Committee recently held a hearing on the topic of e-waste (electronic waste), specifically the Covered Device Recycling Act.  Passed in 2010, this Act established a program for recycling “covered devices” such as televisions, computer monitors, tablets, and laptops.  Unfortunately, because of the amount of products needing to be recycled and the cost of doing so, e-recyclers are not profiting and are therefore, ending contracts for programs such as that provided by YCSWA.  Calls have been made to amend the Covered Device Recycling Act to address such issues, and the Committee’s hearing was a first step towards identifying areas that may need to be changed.

Video of the full hearing can be viewed on Committee Chairman Scott Hutchinson’s website

Senate Returns to Session Next Week

On Monday, the Senate will convene for session, which you can watch live on my website.

Additionally, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, Workforce, & Community and Economic Development will hold a hearing on issues related to charter school funding.  For details on this hearing and to watch for updates on other meetings, check the Senate Committee meeting schedule.
